“There is no ceasefire happening with us. When protecting the home, the future of our child and the Jewish future - there is no respite.”

Except for the 3 weeks of bein hazmanim twice a year. Or is it 4 weeks? Oh, and let’s not forget the other smaller breaks like Chanukah. Tiyulim are very popular.

Expand full comment

Yeah. No one in health care gets breaks like that. Maybe academia, but they are expected to write and publish.

And to serve in the army before university.

This is not a morally complicated issue.

A perfect example of how free handouts and entitlements deform one's personality. It's probably one reason Chazal were so against it.

I’m visiting Jerusalem and I see young charaedi men schnoring for money. I guess that is more important than learning and definitely more important than working or serving.

Expand full comment

Shnoring is definitely a priority. Studying not so much.

Taieb is not your standard haredi politician, let alone Shas politician. He himself served in Givati and went back into learning afterwards, under Rav Mordechai Eliyahu (not haredi).

He then served as a Rav.

So he's obviously quite serious about learning, not using it as a smokescreen for draft dodging and smoking in the hallways.

Not unlikely that his son is also pretty serious and perhaps the one in 1,000 that will go on to be an asset to Clal Yisrael as a Rav and Torah scholar.

(One can debate whether exceptions should be made for the demonstrably exceptional, but it's not unreasonable.)

Nevertheless, a stupid thing to say, without the qualifier that his own son is demonstrably exceptional.

If he was able to serve and then become a Rav don't you think his son should be ale to do the same thing?

Seems that his son, unlike the father, has been in a strictly haredi environment his whole life, so probably no, he would not do well outside of that environment.

And perhaps the son has far greater potential to be a talmid chacham than his father.

I am not endorsing what he said, just giving a limmud zechut.

How about the fact an MK proudly stating his son will break the law? They banned Kahane for less.

Unless I am mistaken, שמד, like משומד, in its most recent usages usually refers to forced conversion or enticement to convert to Christianity.

So, by calling their organization

הוועדה המשותפת להצלה משמד הגיוס

they are saying that being required to fight with the IDF is essentially equivalent to being forced to convert to Christianity.

Intelligent, rational argumentation is not a salient feature of the chareidi world, unfortunately. However, hysterical, childish posters are apparently.

Expand full comment

Not apparently. Obviously!

Expand full comment

Not that I agree with their argument, but they're using it as Chazal do, one who rebels against Torah and Mitzvos, irrespective of having joined a different formalized religion.

Expand full comment

You mean it is not equivalent? Probably worse!

Expand full comment

Oh, immeasurably worse! 😀

MK Yossi Taieb

When they take his son to prision , he should be picked up himself.

They don’t deserve to live in Israel. Ship em out to Golus as they say it. .

Spot on. His assumptions, interpretations, tone, style, & nonuse of mefarshim are decidedly Christian. But the giveaway here in his comments, besides that he quotes Lincoln & grimke (huh?), is his quote from revelations, a sefer nozri.

He is also an armchair Christian that has no political/government position. The late Rabbi Stopler ob"m notes, 'Christians teach the philosophy of “turning the other cheek” and “loving your enemy.” Do you know of any Christian nations that live by this impractical ethic, or even take it seriously?' Rabbi S. was careful to mention "nations" none of whom practice such extreme pacifism. Even the Lama (including his cheek) ran away from the Chinese. Only those in the armchair speak this way.

Unfortunately they do represent Torah. Your view is an increasingly minority group, and while correct, has lost the war. Judaism today is either (a) ultra orthodox insanity (b) religious nationalist zealotry or (c) the increasingly detached what remains of reform.

Torah is what the Jews made it. And these 3 options are what we made it.

Here is a chareidi book published in response to the attacks of people like you:

The author works for a living and serves in the IDF. How is he remotely representative of the Charedi world?

If he were looking for a shidduch he would be 2nd or 3rd class in the Charedi world.

The solution is simple: abolish the draft. Conscription is slavery.

You had me with you... except for the end. The issue should be that SOME chareidim, who may be amazingly sincere and proficient in their learning, are letting politics infect their Ahavas Yisroel. And by the way, you're very proud of your son בלי ע"ה ; )

Yes, there is a copy of the poster on Brim's blog without his name. Sorry.
