I was active in Boy Scouts for six years. I loved it. I didn't make Eagle Scout, partly because we moved halfway through my time in Scouting and partly because I wasn't sufficiently motivated. I got the ability to lead events with no adult supervision whatsoever -- we just planned hikes and bike trips on our own, telling our parents approximately where we were going. I even planned camping trips although the adult leaders had to be the ones to arrange for the permission to camp on private land. (One was in a floodplain; the adults really should have vetoed that one!) The movement imploded decades later with a lot of abuse scandals; I can honestly say that I say no evidence of any. It was a real movement and one of my best friends from that period is now the head of the local Scouting Council. (I thank Facebook for allowing us to reconnect.) Today almost every youth activity in the US seems to be parent-generated, with "helicoptering" very common -- something I did not experience at all as a mostly free-range kid.

When I moved to the Bronx 25 years ago we had active groups of National Council of Synagogue Youth, of Bnei Akiva, and a Sabbath-observant Scout troop. All seem to have died. :( Not sure what happened. There is no shortage of kids in those age groups, and there are numerous Israeli expat families. We have no significant Charedi presence in the county.

I should be ashamed that I am not surprised by the Charedi behavior. It gives Judaism a bad name even among observant Jews. "A light unto the nations"?

Where do I go to resign my membership?
