He is not a rabbi but in charge of all the logistics and answering non halachik questions that are related to religious questions. Many from non religious soldiers. The soldiers from the rabbinical corps often have to go all the way up to the front line to fulfill their duties. It is not easy to get good people for the corps.
It doesn’t just make you a better Jew. It makes you a better man, or woman. You learn discipline, focus, responsibility, and teamwork. Anyone who served learns valuable lessons for life.
Artists and athletes were not exempt from military service in the US. Glenn Miller served in the US Army Air Corps during World War II and died when his plane disappeared in 1944. Ted Williams was a US Marine Corps pilot in World War II and the Korean War and in the latter conflict he flew missions alongside John Glenn. Elvis Presley was famously drafted; his manager convinced him to serve as a regular soldier and was sent to Germany. There are numerous other examples.
