Same precautions about not giving out location publicly in Toronto, after my former shul sponsored and advertised an event to learn about buying a home in Israel. There was a huge anti-Israel demonstration outside.
Physical safety is not just about the odds of getting killed. Its also about not being harmed, being verbally abused or being afraid to walk in the street. While London and other diaspora Jews are not currently afraid of being murdered for being Jewish, they are afraid of other consequences for being visibly Jewish which do not exist in Israel and which they never had to worry about until recently.
The big difference is the ability to defend oneself. Between 1882-1914 almost 2 million left Jews because of the pogroms there. The percentage of Jews who were actually affected by the pogroms was far below 1% but the feeling of helplessness in the face of govt sanctioned persecution led to so many people leaving because they knew they had no way to defend themselves if the next pogrom came for them. In Israel, however high the casualties, we know that we can and do fight back and that gives us a greater ability to face the future that we will never have elsewhere.
I would add that I disagree with the author’s emphatic statement “ that there will not be a mass slaughter of Jews. It’s just not going to happen”
Maybe not this year or next but this is the way it starts . How is the author so sure
First the dehumanzation and libels , the demonstrations, the pushing Jews out of public life
It takes a while
But based on the tepid responses of the authorities to the Jews who have been murdered( Bondi Beach, Washington DC ( young Christian Zionist couple) at the Israeli embassy event , Boulder Colorado a holocaust survivor set on fire with a Molotov cocktail - its coming
Every Jewish school and synagogue has armed guards and members carrying guns
Our governments are replete with Jew haters - Israel bashers —- it’s a ticking time bomb
I pray for the safety of all of our people
in Israel and in the diaspora
We should encourage a# many young ppl as possible to make Aliya
Yes there will always be Jews outside of Israel but our destiny is in Israel
I agree with Bob -it’s not just about not getting killed tomorrow
It’s about fear of being openly Jewish in many places - the abuse and harassment is escalating ( esp in Mamdani’s NYC and surrounding areas
Homicide rates per 100,000 population, 2025:
London, UK 1.07 (one of the lowest in the world among large cities)
New York City, USA 3.64 (one of the lowest in the United States)
Israel 3.04
82% of the homicide victims in Israel were Arabs.
Perception is more important than reality.
